A breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple to a higher, more youthful position. It restores firmness and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or ageing — and can be combined with an implant when more volume is also wanted.
A breast lift removes stretched, excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to raise the breast, then repositions the nipple and areola higher. It reshapes rather than enlarges; if you also want more volume or fullness, it is combined with an implant (augmentation-mastopexy). Scar pattern depends on the degree of sagging.
A breast lift is performed under general anaesthesia:
Assessment & planning — the degree of sagging is assessed and the scar pattern planned.
Skin removal & reshaping — excess skin is removed and the breast tissue tightened and reshaped.
Nipple repositioning — the nipple and areola are moved to a higher, natural position (and resized if needed).
Recovery — a support bra is worn; most go home the same day or after one night.
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
Have sagging, drooping or deflated breasts
Notice nipples that point downward or sit below the breast crease
Have changes after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or ageing
Are at a stable weight and not planning further pregnancies
Are in good health, a non-smoker (or can stop), with realistic expectations
Days 1–3Soreness and swelling; support bra worn; rest
Weeks 1–2Most return to desk work; avoid lifting
Weeks 4–6Gradual return to exercise; no heavy upper-body work
Months 3–12Swelling settles; scars soften and fade
A breast lift reshapes but does not significantly change size; staying at a stable weight and completing pregnancies help keep the result.
A breast lift is a well-established procedure, but risks include scars (their extent depends on the technique, fading over time), changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, delayed healing, and possible effects on future breastfeeding. The small risks of anaesthesia also apply, and smoking impairs healing. An experienced surgeon plans the scar pattern to balance lift and discretion.
